National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day
This Hispanic Heritage Month, FCAA had the honor to attend the #AdelanteHIVSummit, a White House convening of over 100 leaders focused on accelerating our national HIV response for Latinx communities.
While extraordinary progress has been made in responding to HIV at the national level, this progress is not equally reflected in Latinx communities. Despite accounting for nearly 1 in 3 (or 32%) of new HIV cases, Latinx communities only received 11% ($27.6 M) of all HIV philanthropy in the U.S in 2022.
Today on National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day, we want to highlight key actions funders can take to enhance the HIV response in Latinx communities:
- Fund solution-oriented research and interventions to identify and address inequities driving the HIV epidemic in the Latinx community
- Special needs exist for research in trans Latina women as this data remains limited; without this data, funding remains inaccessible
- Special needs exist for prevention and testing programming for CBOs (testing kits, condoms, PrEP, etc)
- Invest in Latinx specific programming by prioritizing funding for culturally and linguistically tailored programs that holistically address the unique needs of these communities
- Directly invest in and collaborate with community to gain deeper insights into their needs, ensuring that resources are aligned and effectively match those needs.
