Herbert “Elvis” Ayesiga
Herbert Ayesiga, also known as Elvis, is an LGBTQ activist and social worker with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and Social Administration from Kampala International University. He currently serves as the Program Officer Grantmaking at UHAI EASHRI (East African Sexual Health and Rights Initiative), Africa’s first Indigenous activist fund for sexual and gender minorities and sex workers. In this role, Herbert assesses grant applications, recommends funding, and provides technical support to grantees. He plays a key role in developing funding strategies, conducting contextual analysis, and supporting outreach and fundraising efforts to enhance UHAI’s mission impact.
Previously, Herbert served as Programs Director at Icebreakers Uganda (IBU), which operates Uganda’s first LGBTQ clinic. At IBU, he was involved in HIV programming activities, focusing on prevention, care, and treatment for LGBTQ individuals. He also conducted groundbreaking research on the mental health challenges faced by LGBTQ people in East Africa, which has informed regional policy and advocacy efforts.
Herbert is committed to mentoring young leaders and promoting digital inclusion. Through his work, he continues to inspire change in Uganda and beyond, advocating for LGBTQ rights and fostering a more inclusive, supportive society for marginalized communities.
